Intonational cues to discourse structure in Bari and Pisa Italian: perceptual evidence
نویسندگان
چکیده
Perception experiments for Bari and Pisa Italian showed that listeners can reliably distinguish between final and non-final utterances in discourse by means of intonation. Bari listeners were also able to distinguish a third category, signa lling that the end of the discourse unit is approaching (penultimate position). This was not the case for Pisa listeners, although there was possibly an effect of speaking style.

Non-finality and pre-finality in bari Italian intonation: a preliminary account
In this paper, a preliminary account of intonational strategies used by Bari Italian speakers in signal non-finality and prefinality in discourse organisation is presented and discussed. Results obtained from auditory and instrumental analysis of speech material elicited with different methods (Map Task dialogues and monologues, lists readings) show that a rich inventory of intonational choices...
متن کاملIntonational strategies for backchanneling in Italian Map Task dialogues
This paper investigates intonational strategies for backchanneling in Bari Italian task-oriented dialogues. Results show that whilst giving feedback, listeners indicate their intention to take the floor or not by using a falling or rising intonation contour respectively. However, this general tendency can be reversed if added paralinguistic meanings are conveyed.
متن کاملAlignment perception of high intonational plateaux in Italian and German
This paper addresses the issue of tonal perception as it relates to special configurations, i.e. fundamental frequency (F0) plateaux. We here review a series of perceptual experiments in two different languages, Italian (Naples and Pisa variety) and German. A subset of the auditory stimuli employed in these studies contained a high F0 plateau, which had to be either identified for a specific to...
متن کاملIntonation as an encoder of speaker certainty: information and confirmation yes-no questions in Catalan.
Recent studies in the field of intonational phonology have shown that information-seeking questions can be distinguished from confirmation-seeking questions by prosodic means in a variety of languages (Armstrong, 2010, for Puerto Rican Spanish; Grice & Savino, 1997, for Bari Italian; Kügler, 2003, for Leipzig German; Mata & Santos, 2010, for European Portuguese; Vanrell, Mascaró, Prieto, & Torr...
متن کاملThe Effect of Discourse Signaling Cues on Foreign Language Listening Comprehension of Iranian EFL Students
A review of previous research on receptive skills among EFL learners reveals that in contrast to extensive research in reading, fewer studies have focused on the process of listening comprehension in EFL contexts. The current study examines the effects of discourse signaling cues on Iranian EFL students' listening comprehension in academic lectures and also investigates the effect of tea...
